Nonlinear Self-excited Thermoacoustic Oscillations of a Ducted Premixed Flame: Bifurcations and Routes to Chaos
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study the bifurcations of a ducted two-dimensional premixed flame using numerical simulations of the coupled dynamical system. When the flame position in the duct is changed the system undergoes transition to period-1, quasi-periodic, period-2, frequencylocked and chaotic oscillations via different bifurcations. For certain parameter ranges multiple stable solutions exist and the ultimate state reached depends on the initial conditions. Hence there is hysteresis and mode switching is possible. Often the system traverses through intermediate states before reaching its final stable state. Two routes to chaos are established for this system: the period-doubling route and the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse route. Flame images show that the flame wrinkles have multiple time and length scales, which reflect the nonlinear behaviour seen in the time series. This study complements recent experiments by providing a reduced order model with approximately 5000 degrees of freedom that captures much of the complex nonlinear dynamics observed in the laboratory.

Chaos in an imperfectly premixed model combustor.
This article reports nonlinear bifurcations observed in a laboratory scale, turbulent combustor operating under imperfectly premixed mode with global equivalence ratio as the control parameter. The results indicate that the dynamics of thermoacoustic instability correspond to quasi-periodic bifurcation to low-dimensional, deterministic chaos, a route that is common to a variety of dissipative n...
متن کاملNonlinear Themoacoustic In/Stability of a Rijke Tube with a Distributed Heat Source
In this paper, thermoacoustic dynamic behaviour patterns of a Rijke tube with a distributed heat source have been investigated. The heat release model consists of a row of distributed heat sources with individual heat release rates. The integrated heat release rate is then coupled with the acoustic perturbation for thermoacoustic analysis. Unlike the conventional approach utilizing the Galerkin...

متن کاملBifurcation Analysis of Self-excited Thermoacoustic Oscillations in Damper-equipped Combustion Chambers
This paper presents the stability and bifurcation analysis of a nonlinear thermoacoustic model consisting of a combustion chamber coupled to a Helmholtz damper. Only the acoustic mode in the cavity of the combustion chamber to which the Helmholtz damper is tuned is considered. The Helmholtz damper includes a non-smooth damping term and can be seen as a tuned vibration absorber with a coupling o...
متن کاملBehaviour of a Premixed Flame Subjected to Acoustic Oscillations
In this paper, a one dimensional premixed laminar methane flame is subjected to acoustic oscillations and studied. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the effects of acoustic perturbations on the reaction rates of different species, with a view to their respective contribution to thermoacoustic instabilities. Acoustically transparent non reflecting boundary conditions are employed. T...
